Don't Lose Your Savings: Why Those Marketplace Document Requests Matter
Discover why submitting your requested document is crucial.

You’ve finished your application, picked a plan, and your health coverage is active. You’re all set, right? Not necessarily.
If the Marketplace sent you a notice asking for documents, your health insurance savings (and even your coverage) are on a ticking clock. Here is why you need to act fast.
1. The "Data Match" Discrepancy
When you apply, the Marketplace checks your information against federal records. If your reported income or citizenship status doesn't perfectly match what the government has on file, they trigger a "Data Match Inconsistency." This isn't a sign you did something wrong—it's just a request for a "paper trail" to verify your eligibility.
2. Your Subsidy is at Risk
The most common document request is for Income Verification. If you don't provide a tax return, W2, or pay stub within the deadline (usually 90 days), the Marketplace may:
Remove your tax credits: This could turn a $50/month premium into a $500/month bill overnight.
Terminate your plan: In cases of citizenship or identity verification, they may cancel your coverage entirely.
3. Avoiding the "Tax Season Surprise"
If you keep receiving a subsidy without verifying your income, you might have to pay that money back when you file your taxes next year. Providing documents now ensures your Marketplace savings are accurate and protected.
How to Handle a Request:
Check your mail (and email): Look for a notice titled "Response Required."
Gather the right files: Common documents include 1040 tax forms, recent pay stubs, or a Social Security card.
Upload, don't mail: Uploading directly to your Healthcare.gov account is the fastest way to get a "Verified" status.
Contact your agent.
The Bottom Line
A document request isn't a "maybe"—it's a requirement to keep your insurance affordable. Most deadlines are strict, and missing them can be a costly mistake.
